On
June 28th 1997, Brooks Becker died after a 14 month battle with lung cancer.
A few weeks before his death, Brooks and a handful of family and friends,
had set a date to play some golf. Brooks never made our golf date, but
we got together anyway and played the round because we knew that Brooks
would have wanted us to. At the end of the round we decided that getting
together once a year to play a round of golf in Brooks' memory would be
a good thing. As we thought about it more, we decided that the round could
be much more than just a small group getting together to play some golf
in the memory of a "good guy". We decided that we would begin hosting an
annual event called the "Good Guy Open". For those of you who knew Brooks,
the name is self explanatory. Our idea is to use the event to raise some
money and then to donate that money to a family or families that have either
battled cancer or are currently dealing with the disease. We hosted the
First Annual Good Guy Open on July 3rd, 1998 which was met with great success.
Since then we have raised over $250,000 and helped over 140 families.
